Chinese Boxing

Our Chinese Boxing class focuses upon the the internal martial arts of Yiquan (mind-boxing) and Xingyiquan (five-elements boxing). Yiquan and Xingyiquan are simple and comprehensive systems which focus upon the development of whole-body power directed through the use of intent/will. Relatively easy to learn, the key movements and training methods are simple but powerfull. Whether your interest lies in being fit and healthy or developing your martial abilities this class is suitable for everyone of all ages and abilities. Furthernore, progress in this system is relatively quick compared to Tai Chi because there are no complicted form sequences to learn.

Yiquan is designed in such a way that students can progress in clearly defined steps from learning how to unify their body to acquire whole-body strength, through learning how to handle their opponents using this new way of moving through pushing hands and fighting applications. As well as basic exercises to develop whole-body power, students can expect to practice footwork, punching technique, bag and pad work and partner training. Our school follows the Yiquan syllabus as taught by Master Yao Chengguang:

• Zhan Zhuang - health & combative standing postures

• Mo li - simple exercises to develop concentration & whole body awareness

• Shi li - simple 'whole-body' movements for power and internal connection

• Mo ca bu - footwork training for stability, power, attack & evasion

• Fa li - punching/striking techniques and drills - explosive force practice

• Tui Shou - pushing hands/partner work

• Ji ji Fa - Sparring practice

'Many people find that learning a whole Tai Chi form is too complicated or that Tai Chi theory is hard to understand and get to grips with in pushing hands and applications. Yiquan, on the other hand, is a simple and down to earth system that is easy to understand and makes clear what internal martial arts are all about. Progression through the comprehensive syllabus is systematic and straightforwards. Excellent for health, many basic elements of the Yiquan system are used extensively in hospitals in China to combat disease and speed rehabilitation.

In my experience Yiquan is a fascinating, highly effective and rewarding martial art to study. Furthermore, it has helped me to understand and improve my Tai Chi ten-fold'
